Maker Spotlights: each day we will be focusing on individual exhibitors, exploring their work and finding out what makes them tick...
Nicola is an artist specialising in painting on silk. When she first learnt this technique, she was initially drawn to the therapeutic way the paints flow and blends together without the use of Gutta or Resist.
Nicola creates silk paintings, sun catchers, silk painting kits and wearable art such as silk scarves and ties.
No two days are the same for Nicola, but she loves the freedom of being able to work “into the evening with music and a glass of wine, creating vibrant silk scarves”.
Nicola teaches silk painting and has worked on many large commissioned projects, for example, making silk flags for schools and festivals. Having always used painting to support her mental health, it is her hope to inspire joy in others using a bright palette of colours.
Nicola is currently working on a two year project as the lead artist for 'Celebration in Silk’, which covers four counties. Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Nicola is making ten, 5 metre high silk flags, working with a different community group to design and paint each flag. These flags will be used for years to come at walking festivals and other events.
