Art by Joanne Spencer - Painting
Joanne Spencer, Printmaking, Painting
Since retiring from the Police in 2017, Joanne wanted to spend more time nurturing her artistic side. This led her to discover lino printing, and since then she has never looked back.
Joanne creates ‘Reduction Lino’ prints, which is where the same block of lino is used to layer each colour. As more colours are added, more lino is removed which reduces the surface area and means she never knows what the print will be like until she pulls it back.
Inspired by shapes, Joanne particularly loves bridge architecture. “I think my favourite part is the challenge of making the lino work to produce what I want it to - how do you make bluebells look like bluebells when you can't carve a bluebell shape in the lino.”
Working from her studio, Joanne started with the basic grade of everything - lino, cutters, ink, paper. “Every time I have been able to upgrade a tool it has been my new favourite, my latest upgrade was my Baren, to burnish the ink onto the paper - love it!”
