Maker Spotlight - Alex Compton

Maker Spotlights: each day we will be focusing on individual exhibitors, exploring their work and finding out what makes them tick...

Working from her studio at The Court Street Gallery in Trowbridge, Alex has a playful approach to her work. She enjoys exploring the properties of glass, experimenting with different firing techniques and colour combinations. Having first experienced glass fusing on her Foundation Year at Trowbridge College, Alex felt It was instant love! “I have always been fascinated by shiny smooth surfaces, as well as the ability to look into objects through layers”.

Reflecting on the past 18 months, Alex says, “I am mostly in love with frit (crushed glass) at the moment, also firing the glass under a weight. Lockdown has given me the opportunity to teach myself a number of metal work processes, which I have used alongside the kiln formed glass to create some new and exciting work”.

Alex teaches fused glass workshops from her studio space. When she’s not teaching or working on her own pieces, she's having adventures with her boys, loving the outdoors and discovering new places.
